Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning Renovation

The Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning (MOCAUP) was located in Futian Central District, Shenzhen. It is an important carrier of education, cultural inheritance, and the development of contemporary art and urban culture. Designed by Austrian design studio Coop Himmelb(l)au, the museum adopts an integrated operational model that combines two distinct functional entities: the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and the Museum of Urban Planning (MOUP), while sharing certain public service spaces. As a cultural landmark and a window into Shenzhen’s urban development, MOCAUP not only showcases the city’s urban planning history, achievements, and future vision but also fosters academic exchange in urban planning and architectural design, providing a core public platform for citizens to learn about and engage with urban development. Since its official opening in 2017, MOCAUP has grown into an internationally influential institution for contemporary art and a key academic exchange platform for urban planning and architectural design. However, with the diversification of contemporary art forms and evolving demands in urban planning exhibitions, the existing exhibition facilities and technologies within the museum are no longer sufficient to support new exhibition formats. Upgrading and renovating the space to enhance audience interaction and exhibition experiences has become essential to accommodate the diversity of future exhibitions. To optimize spatial utilization and provide the best viewing experience, PILLS was invited to participate in the renovation design of the Museum of Urban Planning. The project covers four major exhibition areas: "Bay Area Metropolis," "Master Plan," "Statutory Planning," and "Highlights of Shenzhen’s New Era Cultural and Sports Facilities." The design aims to enhance spatial flexibility and exhibition engagement, delivering planning information in a more intuitive and dynamic manner. By fostering an immersive cultural and humanistic atmosphere, the project seeks to create a compelling and engaging visitor experience.
