“2024 Shenzhen Public Building Achievements Exhibition” Curation and Space Design
2024 Shenzhen Design Week is founded on the procedural experience of exploring and practicing public architecture, serving as an integrated, influential, and pioneering international platform for design exchange. As a significant component of this event, the “A Vision of Co-Habitation: 2024 Shenzhen Public Building Achievements Exhibition" opened on April 30th at Shenzhen Civic Center. PILLS principal architect Zigeng Wang was invited to curate the exhibition, with PILLS responsible for its design. Collaborating with multiple entities including Shanghai Fengyuzhu Culture Technology Co., Ltd., Silkroad Visual Technology Co., Ltd., SURE Design, and Far East Photovoltaic Technology (Guangdong) Co., Ltd., the exhibition presents multi-layered design showcases and exchange formats. Aligned with national initiatives such as the “Dual Carbon" goal and the strategic deployment of “Digital Government and Smart City Construction," the 2024 Shenzhen Public Building Achievements Exhibition centers on the theme of “A Vision of Co-Habitation." At its core lies the notion that public buildings enrich communal life, spotlighting Shenzhen's endeavors and achievements across various sectors deeply intertwined with people's well-being, including education, healthcare, culture & sports, and waterworks. The exhibition underscores Shenzhen's commitment to humanistic care, sponge city construction, digital intelligent building practices, and the application of green, low-carbon technologies. By revisiting Shenzhen's public construction journey, the exhibition ignites imagination and anticipation for a harmonious future existence. Situated within Shenzhen's “urban living room," the Civic Center, the exhibition adopts a design concept inspired by the spatial intentions of “city streets." This approach aims to foster an open atmosphere, inviting citizens to engage with the exhibits directly and conveniently, seamlessly integrating the exhibition into their everyday lives. Irregularly arranged exhibition walls evoke the winding pathways of streets, connecting diverse public building exhibition zones, symbolizing the rich diversity and close integration of urban life. This design philosophy conveys the notion that the exhibition itself is an intrinsic part of communal life, resonating with the overarching theme of this year's Design Week, “Design for a Better Life." The naturally formed enclosed spaces created by the exhibition walls serve as the primary exhibition areas, housing six major chapters: “Education," “Healthcare," “Culture and Sports," “Waterworks," “Crafting Spaces, Building Dreams," and “United for the Future." Comprising a combination of panels, niches, and platforms, these spaces form a continuum of diverse interactive interfaces, complemented by various exhibit forms such as models, images, and smart screens. Together, they create an immersive exhibition experience that seamlessly blends reality with virtuality. As visitors enter the Civic Center, they embark on a metaphorical journey along urban streets, witnessing a vibrant, environmentally conscious urban lifestyle portrayed by various public buildings. From multiple perspectives, the exhibition systematically explores the role of public architecture in shaping future urban life.
