“THE 8 X JEFF KOONS” BMW Limited Edition Car Display Design

PILLS was invited to design the exhibition booth for “THE 8 X JEFF KOONS Limited Collection” during the 2022 Shanghai Westbund Art & Design Fair. This globally limited edition of 99 sports cars combines BMW's advanced manufacturing techniques with the iconic Pop Art symbols of artist Jeff Koons. This is not just a “work of art on wheels" but a priceless masterpiece that could find its place in a museum's collection. Just as each masterpiece of art has its exclusive framing, lighting, and exhibition design, “THE 8 X JEFF KOONS” needed an exhibition space that matches its prestige, integrating the energy of time and space, converging light and color, to comprehensively present a work that transcends the boundaries of art and technology and pioneers the synergy between culture and commerce. We transformed Pop Art symbols from the car, including the explosions and stripes, into spatial installations. This way, Jeff Koons' paintwork transcends two-dimensional art on canvas and bursts into the realm of reality as abstract Pop Art energy. The sports car, surrounded by vibrant yellow, speeds out and generates a three-dimensional explosive geometric tunnel. The tunnel blossoms on the side facing the audience, meaning “THE 8 X JEFF KOONS” car’s infinite possibilities in breaking boundaries and racing towards in the future. Light flows through the tunnel, creating striped patterns of light corresponding to the car's pattern, which enhances the extension of the space, as well as the vitality released by the combination of the car and art. The booth serves as a portal, implicating the sports car rushing in from another world and simultaneously becoming a part of “THE 8 X JEFF KOONS” identity, imparting spatial depth and verve to the artwork.
